Riots and fires in three other Turkish prisons

A fire broke out in Osmaniye T Type Prison where ordinary prisoners set beds and blankets on fire on Monday night. A guardian and fifteen prisoners were taken to hospital, suffering from smoke poisoning.

Another fire broke out in H-3 ward of Antep E-Type Closed Prison as political prisoners started a riot on Monday evening to support the riot in Urfa E Type Prison where thirteen political prisoners burnt to death alive on 16 June night after starting a fire in a ward to protest against poor prison conditions. Five prisoners were seriously affected by the smoke of the fire.

One other fire broke out in Adana Kürkçüler E-Type Prison’s ward for juveniles on Monday evening. Ten child prisoners who were affected by the smoke were taken to hospital after the fire which was in a short time extinguished by fire brigade crews of Adana Municipality.

On the other hand, Urfa E-Type Closed Prison witnessed a new fire on Monday afternoon. Fourteen prisoners got burnt in the fire which was taken under control in a short time.

In a statement about yesterday’s incident, Republican People’s Party (CHP) Antep deputy Mehmet Þeker stated that the fire broke out after juvenile prisoners set beds and blankets on fire.

Families of prisoners who gathered in front of the prison after the incident were attacked by police with pressure water and gas bombs.
