Serhildan said in a press release announcing the event that "the Turkish AKP-MHP government announced several weeks ago a new military offensive in South Kurdistan (North Iraq), with the aim of taking control of the Garê region, a strategic base for the Kurdish PKK guerrillas. For this, it received the green light from all its partners, including Iraq, where President Erdoğan was visiting on 22 April. The two countries signed more than 20 agreements, including security and economic ones.”
The statement continued: "In South Kurdistan, the support of the local population but, above all, experience and military inventiveness have allowed the guerrillas to fight for years with bravery and success against the second NATO army. This is despite almost unconditional material support for Turkey from its Western allies and the multiple means used by the Turkish army: chemical weapons, fighter planes, drones and helicopters, in addition to attempted land invasions."
