The presidents of 15 bar associations in Northern Kurdistan are traveling to Ankara on June 17-18 to discuss the ongoing process and new constitution debates in Turkey. The bar presidents will meet with the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and the Republican People's Party (CHP) on June 17, and with the New Path Party and Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş on June 18.
The delegation wants to gather information in Ankara on the current state of constitutional discussions and at the same time present its own proposals and expectations for the reform process. The focus will be on questions concerning the legal form of possible changes, the role of parliament in possible peace negotiations with Abdullah Öcalan, and a political solution to the Kurdish question.
The delegation includes the presidents of the bar associations from the provinces of Ağrı, Diyarbakır, Bitlis, Hakkari, Bingöl, Dersim, Batman, Muş, Kars, Iğdır, Urfa, Adıyaman, Siirt, Şırnak and Van.
The bar presidents see their visit as part of civil society's contribution to the political debate in Turkey. The Kurdish regions have long been calling for greater participation in fundamental political reform processes.
