Shops closed in Nusaybin to support mayor Gökkan

Shops remain closed today in Mardin's (Mêrdîn) Nusaybin (Nisêbîn) district where people have walked to the border to express their support to Nusaybin mayor Ayşe Gökkan who remains on death fast in a mined land on the border. Gökkan who went on hunger strike three days ago  has turned her protest against the building of the wall between Nusaybin and Qamişlo into a death fast on Thursday.

Hundreds of people in the district accompanied Gökkan at the border till late night yesterday. Health officers from the Border Battalion Kenan Dağbaşı Barracks visited the mayor late in the night but failed to convince her for treatment. During a second visit to Gökkan early in the morning, the medical team stated that the mayor was not in good state of health and needed to be hospitalized. Gökkan once again refused treatment and said she would not leave the area.

Colleagues of the mayor and workers at the council also stopped working and joined the protest at the border where there is heavy police presence to prevent Gökkan from contacting demonstrators.

Turkish security officials have also covered the wire fences on the border with green clothes in order to prevent Gökkan's communication with the people who will also walk to the Qamishlo border today in solidarity with the mayor of Nusaybin.
