Sit in against Turkish air raids in Rome - UPDATE

The Kurdish communities in Italy together with the Rome Kurdistan Net are staging a sit in against the Turkish air raids today and tomorrow in Piazza Venezia.

Calling on the people to join the demonstration the associations underline that "since July 16 Iran has stepped up military operations in South Kurdistan, while on August 17 the Turkish aviation has begun a series of heavy bombing in the Iraqi territory. The air raids are officially directed against some of the bases of the People's Defence Forces (HPG), the fighters of the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers' Party). The reality is that civilians have been heavily targeted. The warplanes departed from Diyarbakir and Batman, heading towards Metina, Zap, Sideka, Gare, Haftanin, Xakurke Xinere, Kandil. The fighters have bombed targets including 500 water wells, bridges, fields, and many roads, causing the evacuation of at least 124 villages and putting the civilian population to its knees".

The appeal also remembers that on Sunday, August 21, following the air strikes killed seven civilians were Kortek (Kandil) guerrillas in the region of 3 Behdinan. Civilian casualties are father, mother and their 5 children including a baby of 6 months and were hit as they tried to escape, fleeing to the edge of their car.

These imposed large-scale military operations are the result of a Turkish-Iranian strategy that has as its clear objective the elimination of the Kurdish population that resides in the effected areas. Turkey has intensified the arrests aimed to hit Kurdish politicians and activists. In this scenario, the statement says "there are fears that the Turkish state do not hesitate to also use chemical weapons. Something plausible considering that the current Chief of Staff, general Necdet Ozel, in 1999, he conducted numerous military operations including in Ballýkaya where 20 PKK guerrillas were killed by chemical weapons."

The communicate ends with a call on the international community, the European Community and the Italian Parliament "to take measures against cross-border military operations by the Turkish army, which clearly constitute a violation of international law and treaties that Turkey has signed. We also call for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question".
