Strasbourg hunger striker: Pressure on CPT should be increased

Hunger striker and journalist Gülistan Çiya Ike stressed that the resistance led by Leyla Güven has been given a loud voice.

Speaking to Stêrk TV on behalf of 14 activists who have been on hunger strike resistance in Strasbourg since 17 December, journalist Gülistan Çiya Ike stressed that the resistance led by Leyla Güven has been given a loud voice.

Ike expressed her joy to the echo of their action and underlined that they hope that the international public opinion will also hear their voices.

Ike said that unfortunately, despite the pressure, the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) has yet to take any initiative.

“It seems that the CPT has actually been acting as a partner of Turkey in the 20 years of leader Öcalan’s affair.”

Ike reminded that in recent days the family of many activists, including Leyla Güven’s, met with the CPT, and emphasized that the attitude in the talks was “unrealistic, far from the institution's mission and political.”

Ike also called on the Kurdish people to continue acting until, together with hunger strikers, they make the CPT change its attitude. She asked the public to send fax and e-mail to the CPT to put more pressure on it.

The Kurdish journalist reiterated that the struggle and the resistance will continue with determination and emphasized that they will not end their action until isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan is lifted.

Hunger striker Ike reiterated the importance of the European public opinion putting pressure on the CPT and called for concentrated diplomatic efforts in all European countries in order to put pressure on Turkey.
