51 students who were detained for participating in the protests against Melih Bulu, who was appointed as rector of Boğaziçi University, were brought to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan. Hundreds of students and families who came to the courthouse for their friends made a press release there.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Esra Akdere, a Boğaziçi student, said that 350 students have been detained in the protests since Monday. Remarking that the university has been turned into an open prison with the appointed rector, Akdere pointed to the police attacks on their protests.
Condemning the attacks on students who staged a demonstration in Kadıköy yesterday, Akdere said, “Our friends were taken off the bus and detained. Hundreds of people were subjected to disproportionate police violence. Our university has been under blockade with barricades, anti-riot water cannon vehicles, Scorpions and long-barreled guns since the first day of this appointment. For a month, all the components of the university have continued their unyielding solidarity against this lawlessness and police violence.”
Akdere reiterated that they will not give up their demand for an egalitarian, democratic, free and autonomous university system. She said, "We always say the same thing. We do not accept, do not give up! Handcuffs on the door of our university, the raid of our homes at midnight, the unlawful detentions and arrests did not and will not deter us. Despite the separation efforts and club closures, we are back together here. We will never bow down. We are calling out from a righteous and honorable point that the rulers cannot even dream of.”
Akdere once again listed their demands as follows:
* All our friends who have been detained and jailed must be released immediately!
* The police army that blockaded our university must withdraw!
* All trustees, especially Melih Bulu, should resign immediately!
* Rector elections should be made with the participation of all components of the universities!
