Suspicious deaths of soldiers increasing

There has been an increase in recent months in the number of suspicious soldier deaths.

Soldier Adem Turhan is claimed to have committed a suicide during his military service at Gazi Hill Military Base in Çukurca district of Hakkari. While Tarhan is claimed to have “killed himself shooting himself on stomach”, his family from Sancaktar village of Karayazý/Erzurum left for Van to learn out about their son’s death.

The former Chief of General Staff, Iþýk Koþaner, in a sound record that went on the internet last August, made a confession, saying; “We shot a soldier on his forehead”.

One of the most recent news was of soldier Celal Kýzýlkan who was claimed to have lost his life as a result of accidental firing on 12 September during his military service in Kars.

One other death news was of soldier Eren Özel who died at Maraþ Mechanized Infantry Battalion on September 8th.

According to the 2010 report of Human Rights Association (ÝHD), at least 34 soldiers died suspiciously last year.

According to data from the Ministry of National Defense, 408 soldiers died committing suicide in the last five years. However, most of the families of dying soldiers resort to the jurisdiction saying that their children fell victim to murder.

Last July, Turkey was sentenced by the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Mustafa Metin whose body was delivered to his family while he was doing his military service. Turkish authorities first argued that Metin “got drowned in water” and then changed their report claiming that Metin “committed a suicide by hanging himself with a rope”.
