Swedish Left Party calls for Öcalan's freedom

Delegates of the Swedish Left Party, Yekbun Alp, Torbjörn Björlund, Joakim Medin and Jeanette Escanilla, have tabled a motion calling on the party to take steps for the freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. They also asked to the party to call for the Kurdish leader's freedom at its congress next year.

The motion submitted by four delegates points out that Kurdish leader Öcalan was captured as a result of a conspiracy led by CIA and Mossad in 1999, and has been held in solitary confinement and denied fair trial for the last 14 years. It also reminds that 3,5 million Kurds declared Öcalan as their political leader in 2005.

Remarking that Kurds also expect the Swedish Left Party to take steps for the removal of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) from the EU list of terrorist organizations, the delegates stressed that those who consider the PKK to be a part of a political solution to the Kurdish issue will not accept the treatment of the PKK's leader as on the outside of the process.

Delegates underlined that Öcalan initiated the peace process with a call but was denied opportunity to progress the process, and added that the Kurdish leader should be liberated and provided with conditions necessary for his involvement in the process on equal terms with the state.
