An internationalist who went to Rojava from Switzerland in 2015 to join the fight against ISIS, has been acquitted by a court on Friday.
A Swiss internationalist stood trial in a case opened by the Federal Department of Defence for “disrupting the defence of the country” and “serving in an army abroad”. The final judgment has been handed down before the Sion Military Court.
Before the hearing on Friday, internationalists from the Solidarity Network and the Democratic Kurdish Council in Switzerland (CDK-S) staged a demonstration at Park de la Planta.
Speakers representing Secours Rouge, FAU (Construction Workers’ Union) and CDK-S defined the trial as a complicity between Switzerland and Turkey and called for enhanced internationalist struggle from Rojava to Sion.
Speaking to ANF, lawyer Hüsnü Yılmaz said that his client had been acquitted.
“The case was opened despite the lack of any evidence proving my client’s participation in military actions during his stay in Rojava. The court decision was made in accordance with humanitarian and international law,” said Yılmaz, adding that the court board concluded that the prosecution did not have competent evidence.
Yılmaz stated that they had provided information about the democratic nature of the Rojava constitution during their defense in court, highlighting the fact that “an internationalist’s presence in Rojava cannot be considered a crime.”
