First round of Syrian Constitutional Committee talks ended

The second round of talks is expected to continue on Monday.

The meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which officially began at the United Nations Office in Geneva on 30 October, ended on Friday and its will continue on Monday for the second round of talks.

Little information is coming out from the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee as they are closed to the press. What is learned is what the UN press office is conveying on a daily basis.

The regime did not meet with the representative of the ‘opposition’

According to reports, Ahmad al-Kuzbari, who chaired the Damascus regime committee, rejected a tripartite meeting scheduled with the participation of UN Special Representative in Syria Geir Pedersen and Hadi al Bahra, the representative of the 'opposition'.

Kuzbari, who spoke at the beginning of the talks, said that they would reject any negotiations that would open the debate on the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria.

Kuzbari reminded the ongoing “occupation” and “terrorist” attacks on the Syrian territory and said: "We will fight until the last inch of the Syrian territory is liberated."

The Syrian Constitutional Committee includes 50 representatives of the Damascus government, 50 delegates of the Syrian Negotiators Committee, which assembles alleged "opposition groups" and 50 representatives from civil society designated by the UN.

UN officials managing the talks refrain from providing information about how long the meetings will continue. The second round of talks is expected to continue on Monday.
