Syriza meeting in Greece talked about hunger strike resistance

An election meeting was promoted by Syriza in Lavrio, Athens.

The work of the political parties for local and European Parliament election to be held on 27 May in Greece is continuing.

An election meeting was promoted by Syriza in Lavrio, Athens. In addition to Syriza executives and members, the meeting was attended by Kurds residents in the district who drew attention to the hunger strike demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Syriza Mayor Candidate for Lavrio Mixalis Spoyrdalakis spoke about the hunger strike and death fasts against isolation imposed on Öcalan. Spoyrdalakis said: “A fascist right government, that’s the type of ruling in Turkey. The representatives of the Kurdish people’s party, the HDP are in prison, as in the case of Selahattin Demirtas, and leading the resistance against isolation like deputy Leyla Güven who has been on hunger strike for 180 days.”

Panos Labros, Syriza Area Policy spokesperson talked about the isolation of Öcalan and the hunger strike resistance. “We have to fulfill our responsibility”, he said.

Dimitris Papadimoylis, European deputy and European Commissioner for Syriza, said that the hunger strikers were putting their body on the line led by HDP deputy Leyla Güven. He continued: “As a lefti force, Syriza goes to the European Parliament, and our first task would be to raise hunger strike resistance demanding the end of isolation against Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.”

Faruk Jiyan was given the right to speak on behalf of the Kurds who had joined the meeting. He emphasized that the solidarity speeches by the Syriza executives and officials should not only remain theory, and added: “The ongoing isolation practices for Öcalan should be urgently brought to the agenda in the Greek Parliament and carried to the European Parliament under the leadership of Syriza. The European Parliament, in particular the Greek Parliament, must fulfill its responsibilities and urge to remove isolation thus allowing the hunger strike to be called off. Seven young people have lost their lives until now. It is necessary to take action so to prevent further deaths.”
