Ten thousand men ready for ground operation

Conflicting news are coming through about a land offensive by the Turkish army into the Kurdistan Federal Region. while Turkey's military says about 10,000 soldiers are taking part in the operation launched after the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) simultaneous attacks yesterday around Hakkari which left 24 soldiers dead, the PKK is denying the Turkish army has entered northern Iraq.

"Following these attacks, a large-scale ground offensive backed by air strikes has been launched in five separate regions within the country and outside the borders with 22 battalions composed of commandos and special operation units" to find members of the PKK, a statement released by the Turkish General Staff said.

The PKK though denied the claim by the Turkish army.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan did not articulate about the operation but said that "our goal is to achieve results with this operation," Erdoðan told a nationally televised news conference. "The military is determinedly carrying out this [operation], both from the air and the ground".
