Tension high at Istanbul KCK trial

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) members are not allowed to the hearing of the KCK trial in Silivri Prison Compound in Istanbul.

193 people, mostly BDP members, are tried in the so called KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) trial in Istanbul today.

The people who have managed to arrive in Silivri despite police blocking many points in Istanbul were stopped 2 km away from the court. Forced to go to the court building on foot, many BDP members have further been subjected to police search along the way. There is a heavy police and gendarme presence in Silivri region. Tension in front of the court continues as around a thousand people are waiting outside despite the gendarmerie units’ efforts to disperse the mass.

Making a statement here, BDP co-chair Gültan Kýþanak said that “Our friends inside the hearing room are standing before the judge today as a consequence of the ongoing political slaughter. We will take our friends away from here and continue to defend our right to do democratic politics. The repression we are facing today is the repression of martial law. Gendarme and police teams have seized our vehicles but our people have managed to get here to show their democratic will.”

BDP deputies Sebahat Tuncel, Pervin Buldan and Sýrrý Süreyya Önder, SDP (Socialist Democratic Party) President Rýdvan Duran, HDK (Peoples’ Democratic Congress) Executive Board member Gülsüm Aðaoðlu, Tekstil Sen President Engin Gül, ESP vice-president Alp Altýnörs, ÖDP (Freedom and Solidarity Party) deputy co-chair Sema Salokoðlu as well as members of KESK, TKP, ESP, SDP, BDP, SODAP, Halkevleri are waiting in front of the court.
