78 people were taken into custody today in the cities of Aydýn, Muðla, Urfa, Mardin, Ankara, Diyarbakýr and Mersin within the scope of political operations that are launched by the AKP government against the BDP and non-governmental organizations under the name of the KCK. Among the detainees are BDP Aydýn Provincial Chair Necmettin Uçar, deputy mayors, members of provincial and municipal council and a large number of students.
Four BDP members were taken into custody in Mersin yesterday while leaving the BDP building at evening hours. While the reason of the detention isn't known, detainees were taken to the Police Directorate.
While 23 people were taken into custody with house raids carried out towards morning in Mardin city center and districts of Nusaybin, Kýzýltepe, Mazýdaðý and Derik, detainees include the BDP provincial chair, former administrators, deputy mayors, members of provincial and municipal council and Eðitim Sen Union.
At least 16 people were taken into custody in Urfa where police raided the Urfa Culture and Art Center and some houses. The detainees, including many high-school and university students, were taken to the Police Department.
Detentions also continue for two days in Muðla where the number of students taken into custody reached 13. The students detained in Mardin, Diyarbakýr and Tatvan were also brought to Muðla.
Including BDP Provincial Chair Necmettin Uçar, 12 people were in the same way taken into custody in Aydýn. While lots of books, newspapers and computers in the raided houses were seized by police, detainees were taken to Aydýn Police Department.
While the military operation in the rural area of Uzunkaya (Biloka) Village of Kýzýltepe/Mardin continues since October 16th, soldiers raided the village and took seven villagers into custody and brought them to Gendarmerie District Command.
In addition, two municipal workers of Kayapýnar Municipality in Diyarbakýr were detained by police yesterday. While the reson of detention isn’t known, workers were teken to the Police Department.
IHD Siirt Branch Secretary Zana Aksu was also taken in custody this morning as a result of the police raid in his house in Ankara. Aksu was taken to Aydýn within the scope of the operation launched in the city.
In a written statement, IHD (Human Rights Association) underlined that the recent detentions and arrests created concerns and demanded the immediate release of human rights defenders and students. The statement said; “The government must end the political genocide operations under the name of the KCK which has become a justification of governmental centers against all opponent segments in the country.”
The police and judiciary activated by the Turkish government have even left the dictatorial and authoritarian regimes behind. While around 4500 people were taken into custody in the last six months alone, the number of arrests exceeded 1600.
Hunting Kurds on one side, the AKP government is on the other side making room for new detainees in the prisons in the Kurdish region. In recent months, hundreds of political prisoners were exiled to prisons in the Black Sea region. According to the latest news coming, following 18 prisoners from Batman, 20 prisoners form Midyat M Type Closed Prison were sent to various prisons in the Black Sea region. The number of detainees in prisons has doubled and reached to 120 thousand since the AKP came to power in 2002.
