The Mediterranean deadlier than ever

The office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that the Mediterranean sea has been deadlier than ever in the first half of 2018. More than 1600 migrants lost their lives in 7 months.

The office of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that over 1600 migrants lost their lives in the Mediterranean as they were attempting to reach Europe between January and July 2018.

UNHCR said, “Arrivals in Europe fell by 41% in total, while rates of death increased sharply.”

The report titled “Journey of the Hopeless” said 1 out of every 18 people who crossed the Mediterranean between January and July lost their lives or were lost at sea. This number was 1 out of every 42 people in 2017.

CAN EUROPE FIND HUMANITY?

The European Bureau Director of UNCHR Pascale Moreau said, “This report confirms once again that the Mediterranean Sea is one of the deadliest maritime passages in the world.”

Moreau said: “With the number of arrivals at European shores falling, the issue is no longer how to manage the arrivals but whether Europe will find the humanity to save lives.”
