There are 469 ill prisoners in Turkey, says minister

Minister of Justice Sadullah Ergin stated that there are currently 469 ill prisoners (including prisoners on remand) in Turkey penal institutions.

Answering Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Sezgin Tanrýkulu’s parliamentary question, Minister Ergin notified that all needs concerning the health situation of ill prisoners have been recorded and monitored properly.

Giving information about 469 ill prisoners in penal institutions, the Minister of Justice stated the followings concerning the current procedure of medical examinations for these prisoners;

“Forensic report procedures of 143 prisoners continue within the scope of suspension of Presidential pardon and execution; 231 among them continue to receive treatment at healthcare organizations in their locations; and other 95 are provided with medical treatment in hospitalized prisoners wards for their diseases that have been confirmed to be outside the scope of their remission or postponement of their sentence.”

The Minister of Justice also noted that a special department has been formed recently in the campus of Metris Prison to meet the health and care needs of sick prisoners.

Minister Ergin added that 59 ill prisoners with serious and permanent diseases have gradually been transferred to Metris R and T Type Prison since 6 March 2012 because of their need for healthcare.
