Thousands of KESK members taking to the streets

Thousands of KESK (Confederation of Public Workers' Unions) members are taking to the streets today for the general strike the Confederation announced yesterday in solidarity with the Taksim protest. The strike is supported by DISK (Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions) and TTB (Turkish Doctors' Union) across the country, and TMMOB (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) in İzmir.

The participation is expected to be higher in İzmir than other cities, with thousands having already started to gather in front of workplaces and will be marching to the Gündoğdu Square before the mass protest to take place here in the afternoon. Tens of thousands are expected to be in the square today.

Only emergency departments accept patients at the hospitals where members of the union are on strike today.

Nor do the municipalities provide service for public transport vehicles in the areas dominated by DİSK Genel-İş Union members.
