Top U.S. envoy in the fight against ISIS resigns

Brett McGurk, the special presidential envoy to the American-led coalition fighting the Islamic State, will speed up his planned resignation.

After the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, has submitted his resignation.

According to American media, the resignation is a result of the US President Trump’s decision to withdraw forces from Syria while the fight against ISIS is still continuing.

CBS News reported that McGurk had been planning to exit his post in February 2019 but he informed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that he will accelerate his departure due to a strong disagreement with President Trump's snap decision to withdraw 2,000 US troops from Syria, effectively abandoning U.S. allies in the region.
