Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan has promised “Zero tolerance against torture during police custody or in prisons” before he was elected. Testimonies from detained people proves that this promise is a big lie.
Recently, 37 students were detained during a protest demonstration of PM Recep Tayyip Erdoðan at the Ýstanbul University. Police used violence during custody. According to allegations, police battered and thrown out students from school stairs during skirmishes and pull a gun on them during custody at the police station.
Þafak Yayla, one of the detained students, stated that following harsh police intervention, they were also beaten by a group of police at the police headquarters.
Eser Morsümbül with renal failure is another student who was taken into custody. His mother claimed the arrests and said that; My son and other students were detained because of asking for free education. My son has really serious health problems. He had brain surgery and his two kidneys are not working. Police knew this since he was arrested before. Still they are taking my son and torturing.
Three children announced that they were also tortured during police custody and asked to work for police in Mersin. Police arrested them on October 9 during a protest demonstration. Seventeen-year-old children also marked that police took their picture with some objects such as knife, masks or pushi despite they do not have these objects.
Being insulted at the Mersin Police Department, the children terrified because of threats to death or sent them in prison.
