Trustee-run municipality puts Turkish flag on street signs in Amed

The municipality of Diyarbakır (Amed) run by a government-appointed trustee, has placed the symbol of the Turkish flag on the street and avenue signs across the city.

Democratically elected co-mayors of Amed (Diyarbakir), Gültan Kisanak and Selcuk Mizrakli, are currently in prison while the municipality has been governed by a government-appointed trustee since August 2019. The HDP co-mayors had been elected with over 62% of votes (nearly 500,000 votes).

The Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality has started to update the street, avenue and door numbers in 17 districts as part of Address Registration System (MAKS) it launched in January 2021. An unusual detail on the signs has been noticed with the latest changes.

The trustee-run municipality has placed the symbol of the Turkish flag on street signs in several locations across the city in recent weeks.

The “Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality” caption and a logo of the municipality were placed on the blue stripe at the bottom of the street signs, with the upper part covered by red with the Turkish flag.
