Turkey: Elderly citizens out for the first time in weeks

After weeks of curfew in Turkey, chronically ill and over 65-year-olds were allowed to go out into the fresh air for the first time on Sunday. In many places, elderly citizens stormed the parks.

For weeks there has been a strict curfew in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan for under 20-year-olds, chronically ill and over 65s to contain the coronavirus from spreading. At the weekend the curfew has been relaxed, so old people could go outside again for the first time. For the time being, however, they are only allowed to go out into the fresh air in the vicinity of their homes for up to four hours.

For thousands of people it was the first walk in seven weeks. The crowds in the parks, however, made it illusory in many places to keep a distance of at least one and a half meters between people. In the Kurdish metropolis of Amed (Diyarbakir), the people by and large adhered to the regulations. Only sporadic violations of the mask duty occurred.
