Turkish Annual inflation at 11.84 percent

Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜIK) announced that Turkey posted an 11.84 percent annual hike in consumer prices in December.

The annual inflation rose 1.28 percentage points last month, up from 10.56 percent in November.

On a monthly basis, consumer price index saw a rise of 0.74 percent in December.

Since the beginning of the year, inflation fell by 8.51 percentage points from 20.35 percent in January. 

Turkey's inflation rate is expected to hit 12 percent this year, as laid out in the new economic program for 2020-2022 announced by the government this September. Economist Mustafa Sönmez said: "Perceived inflation is 15 percent. In food, household goods is around 20 percent. An inflaction of 12% is an abnormal situation."

The highest annual increase in consumer prices has been recorded in alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 43.12 percent. It is followed by education with 14.46 percent and by health and miscellaneous goods and services with 13.63 percent.

The lowest annual increase has been been in communication with 3.16 percent. It is followed by clothing and footwear with 4.53 percent, by recreation and culture with 7.03 percent and by furnishing and household equipments with 9.79 percent.
