TurkStat can't hide increase in inflation rate

TurkStat announced in January that the price of 268 items out of 418 increased. Annual inflation increased by 1.35 percent to 12.15.

TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute) said Turkey's annual inflation rate was recorded at 12.15 percent in January, increasing from 11.84 percent in December 2019.

On a monthly basis, consumer price index saw an increase of 1.35 percent last month.

When compared with the prices in January 2019, alcoholic drinks and tobacco with 42.21 percent is the main group where the highest annual increase was measured in January 2020.

This group is followed by education with a price increase of 15.11 percent and by miscellaneous goods and services with a price increase of 15.01 percent.

While the lowest annual increase was recorded in communication with 2.14 percent last month, recreation and culture with 5.66 percent, clothing and footwear with 6 percent and furnishing and household equipment with 7.51 percent were the other main groups with a low annual increase.

Among the highest monthly price increase in January 2020 registered were services with 4.88 percent. This group is followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages with 4.65 percent and by healthcare with 3.96 percent.

In January 2020, out of 418 items considered in the consumer price index, average prices of 25 items remained unchanged while average prices of 268 items increased and those of 125 items decreased.
