Two killed, 79 detained by police in four days

At least 79 people have been taken into custody for political reasons in the last four days since police murdered two Kurdish civilians in Gever, Hakkari's Yüksekova district on 6 December.

Reşit İşbilir (35) and Veysel İşbilir (34), were shot dead by Turkish police during a demo against the ongoing attacks on the cemetery of eight HPG (People's Defense Forces) guerrillas in the Orman neighborhood. The autopsy report indicated that Mehmet Reşit İşbilir was hit by 6 bullets and Veysel İşbilir by 2.

Police continued to brutally attack people who joined the funeral of the two men one day later. The police crackdown came after two Kurdish civilians were laid to rest and people left the cemetery following the speech of BDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş.

Bemal Tokçu (19) was severely wounded by a bullet fired which hit him on the head, and is currently hospitalized in Van, facing the risk of imminent death. Doctors say he has slight chance to live.

9 December: Police forces and a racist group attacked students of Antalya's Akdeniz University who protested against the murders by police in Yüksekova. Ten students were taken into custody.

BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Şemdinli district chair Cabbar Taş was detained by soldiers while on his way to the funeral for two Kurds in Yüksekova. A minor, aged 16, was also detained by police in Şemdinli.

Police also detained three minors in Hakkari's Şemdinli district after brutally attacking people who took to the streets to protest the police killings in Gever.

8 December: 35 people were taken into custody following the crackdown police staged on people who protested against Yüksekova killings in the province of Kars. Police took 15 other people into custody in the main Kurdish city Amed/Diyarbakır during a demo against the police killings. A student in Ağrı was detained by police for an unknown reason in the evening.

Police also attacked doctors who wanted to make a statement to the press at Istanbul's Gezi Park in Taksim. ETHA reporter Emrah İlingi was detained by police and released after police seized his camera and deleted all photos he had taken.

7 December: Two students, Serhat Yıldız and Savaş Aydın, were detained and remanded in custody in the Tatvan district of Bitlis.

6 December: Seven people, including members of the BDP, were detained as a result of house raids in Dersim's Ovacık district. Five among them were arrested and sent to Malatya E Type closed prison for alleged membership to an illegal organization.

Tuğçenur Özbay, student at Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, was assaulted and detained outside the faculty in Beyazıt.

According to HDK (Peoples' Democratic Congress) Youth Assembly, 260 members of the HDK and BDP were detained and 87 among them were remanded in custody in November. BDP Urfa Youth Assemby members Hikmet Yaygın and Leşker Akman and BDP Party Assembly member Kutbettin Saltan have also been arrested early December.

As many as 36 people, including 20 minors, have been arrested in Şırnak and its districts in the last one month. People suffered from violations of rights during house raids. Lawyer Rojhat Dilsiz voiced concerns over the increasing detention and arrest of children in particular.
