United Youth Council: We march together

In Istanbul, four youth organizations have joined together to form a joint council under the motto "For our freedom - against fascism: We march together.”

The founding of the "United Youth Council" was announced at an event at the HDP headquarters in Istanbul’s Bağcılar district. Four youth organizations have joined forces under the motto "For our freedom - against fascism: We march together".

The Youth Council of the Democratic Party of Peoples (HDP), the New Democratic Youth, the Revolutionary Students' Association (DÖB) and the Revolutionary Forces of Youth (DEV-GÜÇ) are involved in the new alliance.

The event was opened with a minute of silence for all revolutionary martyrs. The welcoming speech was held by Volkan Atmaca. He pointed out that the youth organizations have already been working together for some time and that the Youth Council, which has now been founded, is to provide the organizational framework for this. The massive attacks by the state are aimed at suppressing every form of organized struggle and causing loneliness, said Atmaca and continued; "And we all bite our lips until they bleed. Inside we are moved by many things we could say. But we know that our problems will not diminish unless we sweep the ruling class aside with a surprising storm.”

Atmaca pointed out that the youth played a decisive role in the legitimate Kurdish uprisings, the resistance of the cotton workers in the Çukurova, the occupation of the landless, the strikes in the factories, in the universities, on the streets and in the struggle against the ISIS barbarians.

"And they will continue to do so. Today we walk together in this tradition. We are the youth who were attacked by all means of violence during the Gezi uprising, who were burned in basements, who are supposed to live with low wages below the hunger line, who are condemned to unemployment, who are supposed to pay for their education, whose language is forbidden, who are exposed to sexual violence on the streets and in the domestic environment, who experience the aggressive LGBTI+ phobia, who are left to rot in prisons, who are tortured on the streets, who are executed at the border. As the youth who are threatened by the palace that we will burn if we join together, we march together today.”

The welcoming address was followed by guest speeches by HDK co-chair Idil Uğurlu, HDP member of parliament Musa Piroğlu, Istanbul HDP co-chair Elif Bulut and writer Temel Demirer. Afterwards a short film was shown and letters from imprisoned students were read out. Afterwards the event continued with a discussion. At the end there was dancing.
