Urfa Prison administrator appointed to a new position

The administrator of Urfa E-Type Closed Prison where 13 prisoners were left to burn alive to death on Saturday night has been appointed to another position while he was expected to be dismissed or to resign.

In an interview to NTV on Monday, AKP Vice President Hüseyin Çelik mentioned the new appointment of the prison’s administrator and said that he has been appointed in accordance with the new decree announced for the summer season.

Çelik remarked that necessary actions will be taken in case of an approved omission by the prison administration and claimed that the investigation into the incident will not last long. Çelik evaluated the large part of current news on the media about the incident as untrue and gave an astonishing answer concerning the over-capacity problem and inhumane conditions in Turkish prisons; “We can’t close prisons because we get reactions when we close them which are of importance for the economy of the provinces they are situated in.” Minister Çelik also noted that 196 new prisons will be built in Turkey a near future.

Thirteen prisoners burnt to death and five others were wounded in Urfa Prison as political prisoners in C15 ward started a riot and set beds and blankets alight Saturday night. In a statement about the incident after an examination in the prison, BDP co-chair Gültan Kýþanak said that the riot in C-15 ward broke out when the prison administration removed the air propeller in the ward which had a capacity for six people but housed eighteen in a city with an air temperature above 40 degree.

Prisoners in Urfa Prison continue to chant "Murderer State" slogans since yesterday.
