Van Mayor dismissed from duty

Arrested Mayor of Van Bekir Kaya was dismissed from duty by the Ministry of Justice for alleged “membership of an armed organization”.

The notification letter with the signature of Interior Minister Ýdris Naim Þahin grounded the dismissal on the verdict of Van 3rd High Criminal Court. The dismissal was ruled before the finalization of Kaya’s lawyers’ objection to his detention since 7 June.

Fourteen people were taken into custody in house raids in Van on 7 June and among them Mayor Bekir Kaya, BDP former provincial chair and Asrýn Law Office lawyer Cüneyt Caniþ, Baþkale Mayor Ýhsan Güler, BDP Muradiye district chair Mehmet Þirin Yýldýz, Özalp Mayor Murat Durmaz, BDP Baþkale former district chair and DTK member Derviþ Polat, Edremit mayor Abdulkerim Sayan, BDP Çaldýran district chair Metin Adugit, BDP Erciþ former district chair Veli Avcý and BDP Van accountant Halis Çakýr were remanded in custody and sent to prison.

As BDP municipalities have been targeted by the AKP government since the local elections in 2009 when Kurds achieved a great success, 35 mayors, six deputies and over 190 Kurdish elected representatives have been put in jail up until today.

BDP Daðpýnar’s jailed Mayor Ayhan Erkmen was also from duty by the Ministry of Justice on 22 April.
