Violence is not our fate, say women in Shengal

One women is killed every four days and raped every three days in South Kurdistan, statics reveal.

According to official figures, more than a thousand women burnt themselves in the last three years. Women's organizations think the number of women suicides to be much higher than the figures revealed.

The region of Shengal is among the areas witnessing the highest rates of women suicides as well as inequality and discrimination of women.

Women in Shengal are denied education after the secondary school, and it is almost impossible to come across women in public enterprises.

"Women here are a kind of blind and disabled people, they are tried to be managed through violence", say women in Shengal who spoke to ANF about the challenges they face.

They say the increasing suicide of women carries the meaning of a rebellion against their social status, and call on women's organization to display sensitivity.

Canê Haydar draws attention to the challenging living conditions of women throughout the Iranian state, and remarks that the women's suicides are taking place because of the violence they suffer from. She says women do not know how to deal with these challenging conditions because they are denied education and other rights, and cannot realize the fact that they are living.

"Women are subjected to violence but they are not aware of this reality. This is because women think what they face is normal, in an environment dominated by tribes traditions. The situation is the same for the women in Shengal where there is no female doctor or teacher because women are not allowed to go to school and to become conscious. They cannot even make an ordinary shopping by themselves, both in the communities of Muslims and Êzidîs. Women must however be taking place in both social and political life", she says.

Referring to the suicides of women, who mostly kill or burn themselves, Haydar says this is a consequence of the violence they are subjected to and their disclusion from the life.

Another women, Wetha Xelil, complains about women politicians' and organizations' negligence about the situation of women in Shengal and adds; "Our region is dominated by feodal value judgments. There is no place for women except for their houses. This is a consequence of the male-dominant mentality. It is matter of mindset but also a reality".

Xelil says they follow the lead of Rojava women who are taking part in all areas of life, also joining the ranks in the battle side by side with men. "Why wouldn't we do the same here where the society needs such a thing more than any region", Xelil says and salutes the struggle of the Kurdish women in Rojava.

Şirin Şirin remarks that the bride exchange tradition is among the basic reasons for women's suicide, and notes that women subjected to bride exchange resort to killing themselves as the only way to voice their refusal against that marriage. "Even this one reason reveals the status of women in the society and the violence they suffer from", she adds.

Şirin underlines that the only way to voice women's reactions is to become conscious, to get organized and to fight. "We should gather at our homes first, discuss our problems, and bring all women in each neighborhood together. This will enable us to reveal our power and to overcome this problem", she adds.
