Wardens battered lawyers during visit to hunger strikers

Repression and attacks against prisoners on hunger strike have extended to their lawyers.

Lawyers from the Prisons Monitoring Commission, formed by the Mersin branch of Human Rights Association (IHD), have met the prisoners on indefinite non-alternating hunger strike in Tarsus No 2 T Type Closed Prison. Lawyers took notes about the situation and conditions of the fasting prisoners who, like thousands of other political prisoners, demand the end of the isolation imposed on Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Following the meeting, the lawyers, Özgür Çağlar, Saniye Biçici, A. Celil Akın and Pınar Dokuz, were obstructed by wardens who attempted to seize the notes they had taken during the visit. Lawyers were battered by the wardens when they reacted against such an arbitrary treatment.

Lawyers were allowed to leave the prison only after a meeting with the prosecutor.
