The women’s march to Ankara takes off today under the leadership of (DÖKH) with the slogan “Democratic Solution to the Kurdish Problem, Freedom for Ocalan”. Sur Deputy Mayor Gülbahar Örmek called on all people to join the march, remarking that their aim is to get peace closer.
Woman human shields against internal and cross-border operations are walking to the capital city Ankara to protest against the authorities decision to deny lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan of their meeting with their client. Ocalan has not been able to see his lawyers for 49 days.
The march will also be joined by Turkish women from western provinces who will march under the slogan “Women walking to Ankara for peace”. Besides feminists, Peace Mothers, DÖKH members and tens of women's organization, moving simultaneously from the region and western provinces today, will converge at the final meeting point in Kýzýlay Square in Ankara on Saturday 17. Following the march, a folder containing the letters written by mothers will be presented to the Parliament by a delegation.
Giving information about the purpose of the march, Sur Deputy Mayor Gülbahar Örmek remarked that the reasons given to justify the isolation of Ocalan are excuses. Örmek said: “Our goal is to get nearer to peace. There was hope because of recent talks about possible negotiations. However, that hope has become weaker and weaker and it is not acceptable for the authorities to treat Ocalan in this way. We want an end this situation.”
