Writer Devecioðlu assesses current situation

Speaking to bianet about the detention of over 150 people in the context of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) operations carried out in Istanbul, Diyarbakýr, Mardin, Ankara, Siirt and Batman two days ago, Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Assembly Member writer Ayþegül Devecioðlu remarked that the operations as a whole target the BDP.

“The timing of the operations, coming soon after the BDP’s return to the Parliament with an aim to take a step for peace, the Prime Minister’s allegations just one day ago that BDP municipalities get money from German Foundations and the approval of cross-border operations against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) all point that the AKP government is trying to find a way for the coming process by turning the country into hell, not through peaceful ways”, said Devecioðlu and remarked that the current process is extremely worrying for the circles that fight for peace.

Devecioðlu noted that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan obviously seems to have the intention to end words, while they are on the contrary giving an effort to not to end words, and emphasized that the ways put earlier into practice where words failed were already experienced to be not the solution.

Telling that Prime Minister Erdoðan takes pride in receiving the vote of every other person while ignoring the 10 percent threshold, Devecioðlu said;

* “These people didn’t vote for the AKP to enable it declare a war. These votes bear a desire for democratization, just like the desire for a new constitution bears democratization and peace.

* Among the people taken into custody within this operation are also names such as Ayþe Berktay and Deniz Zarakolu who are among the well-known translators, intellectuals and artists of this country.

* The Prime Minister said that he would fight against terror and negotiate with politics. These operations carried out in the first day of BDP’s return to the Parliament show that Erdoðan wants to make headway by making people kneel down and threatening them, not by conducting negotiations.

* Today, owing to the anti-terror law, 200 thousand people are standing trial because of their thoughts. We are now entering the process of a new constitution while a people living in Turkey is declared as terrorist and the Kurdish issue is the major problem that creates the need for a new constitution.

* There is a need for the creation of trust environment to enable the process of the new constitution function properly and a need for law amendments to clear the way for freedom of expression. It is not possible to talk about peace when there is a war and nobody can speak.”

Noting that Ýmralý prisoner PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan is expected to play important roles in the peace process, Ayþegül Devecioðlu indicated that Öcalan is the main actor that can draw the PKK from mountains for peace.

“We see that they are not willing to take steps for peace by isolating Öcalan and denying permission for his meeting with his family and lawyers in a process which we thought was evolving into peace.” said Devecioðlu and expressed her opinion that Öcalan is one of the most important actors in the peace process for being an actor accepted by all components of the Kurdish movement.
