The protests against the appointment of Melih Bulu as trustee rector to Boğaziçi University on 2 January by Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan continue. University teachers and students, as well as students from other universities are protesting against the trustee rector. The main slogan of the protests is "Not imposed but elected".
The pressure on students who have been active both in university and outside for more than a month has also increased. Hundreds of students were detained, arrested, and subjected to police violence and torture. Despite the attacks, while the students maintain their determination to continue with the protests and reiterated that they won’t accept the imposed rector.
Boğaziçi University students made a statement in front of the rector building every day and demand the rector's resignation. Hundreds of riot police, TOMA and armoured vehicles are kept ready while all four sides of the university are besieged by police barricades due to the protests.
University turned into a police headquarter
At the exit of the Boğaziçi metro, the police check the bags of everyone coming out, and check the ids of those passing in front of the university. All vehicles entering the University are searched and students are taken in after they pass through the identity check.
In addition, the police have set up headquarters in the workplaces of many shopkeepers around the university.
