The Executive Council of Al-Jazira Region and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria issued a statement to condemn the killings of Qamishlo Canton Council's co-chair Yusra Darwish and deputy co-chair Leman Shweish, as well as their driver, Furat Touma. Co-chair Kabi Shamoun was injured in the attack carried out by a Turkish drone.
The statement said: "In light of the ongoing systematic targeting policy pursued by the Turkish occupation state in the north and east regions of Syria, we deeply regret to inform you that on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, a car owned by the Qamishlo Canton Council was treacherously attacked by Turkish occupation drones.
This cowardly act resulted in the tragic loss of three members, including Co-President Yusra Darwish and Deputy Co-President Leman Shweish of the Qamishlo Canton Council, as well as their driver, Furat Touma. Co-President Kabi Shamoun sustained injuries during the incident while on a field tour of the Autonomous Administration institutions in Qamishlo Canton."
The statement continued: "The Turkish occupation's targeting policy has become increasingly evident, specifically aiming at undermining the Autonomous Administration project and endangering officials and workers within its institutions.
These institutions play a crucial role in serving the diverse components of the region and ensuring security and stability in Syria. It is no coincidence that this attack occurred as the Autonomous Administration announced its intent to prosecute leaders and members of the terrorist organization Daesh. Turkey, a sponsor of terrorism, seeks to conceal its support for terrorism, particularly in terms of providing a nurturing environment for Daesh in the occupied territories."
The statement added: "We have consistently taken a proactive approach, presenting projects and visions aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis. However, it has become apparent that certain regional and international actors do not wish for this crisis to end. Therefore, today's attack, coinciding with the commencement of trials against Daesh leaders and members, as well as the launch of the Astana meetings, which have demonstrated hostility towards the regions of northeast Syria, reaffirms who genuinely desires a solution and an end to the crisis, and who seeks its perpetuation."
The statement said: "On behalf of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration in Al-Jazira Region, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and our people and wish the injured a speedy recovery. We remain resolute in our determination to persevere in safeguarding the gains achieved by our people, despite the terrorism propagated by the Turkish state and its proxies such as Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham and Daesh. We also call upon the international guarantors of the ceasefire in northeast Syria to fulfill their responsibilities and put an end to the terrorism carried out by the Turkish occupying state."
