Autonomous Administration votes to renew the Social Contract of Northern and Eastern Syria

The Social Contract of Northern Syria is being renewed. At a meeting in Hesekê, a thirty-person committee was set up to prepare a new draft within two months.

The Social Contract of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria is to be renewed. The decision was taken on Thursday at a meeting of the Autonomous Administration in Hesekê. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Autonomous Administration, political parties, the women's and youth movement and civil society organizations. A total of 150 people were present.

The Social Contract emerged from the Rojava revolution, on 19 July 2012 in Kobanê. It was ratified in December 2016 as the “Social Contract of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria”. Women's liberation, ecology and grassroots democracy are the basic principles of the contract. In particular, the emphasis on local self-government of the people in councils and civil society organizations clearly sets this work apart from other constitutions. Within the framework of the social contract, all people in the autonomous area have the right to decide on issues related to them: power lies in the region and not in the center. This gives the population the opportunity to represent themselves and to decide about their lives.

With the military victory over ISIS, the self-governing territory has been expanded since 2019 to include eastern Syria. The articles of association are now to be adapted to the new developments. As Sîham Qeyro, the co-chair of the General Council of the Autonomous Administration, explained at the meeting, the renovation is intended to ensure the protection of the rights of all people in Northern and Eastern Syria.

A committee of thirty members has been set up for the revision of the contract, which is to present a new draft within two months.
