Bernard Kouchner: Water reduction is a great danger

“We were surprised by the water reduction in the region. If the necessary drinking water cannot be provided, this will affect the public,” said former French Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner.

The Autonomous Administration Foreign Relations Office announced that they held a meeting with former French Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Kouchner, Philosopher Gérard Chaliand and member of the French Water Cooperation Authority Alain Boaneh on Tuesday evening.

According to a statement released by the Foreign Relations Office, the French delegation was welcomed by Ebdulkerîm Omer, co-chair of the Autonomous Administration Foreign Relations Office, and Sena Deham, member of the Executive Council of the Foreign Relations Office.

The statement said that the parties discussed the Turkish state’s cutting off the water, political activities, peace talks and inter-Kurdish dialogue. Ebdulkerîm Omer informed the French delegation about the latest developments in the region and spoke about the Turkish military attacks on North and East Syria and the crimes that Turkey-backed mercenaries commit each day in the occupied regions.

“The decision to close the Til Koçer Border Crossing should be reconsidered. Because of the decision, 5 million people living in the region cannot receive humanitarian aid. Moreover, coronavirus is spreading rapidly, and vaccines and necessary health supplies should be provided to the region,” Omer told the delegation.

Bernard Kouchner emphasized the importance of their participation in the International Water Forum. “We were surprised by the water reduction in the region. If the necessary drinking water cannot be provided, this will affect the public. In a similar vein, this will affect agriculture. In this context, the forum means a warning to everyone. This is an international problem and will affect both Syria and Iraq. We deem it as a great and immediate danger.”

“I knew that the Turkish state had cut off the water in this region. This is unacceptable anywhere in the world and we should claim this cause for the sake of civilians.

The Autonomous Administration has the opportunity to attend the International Climate forum to be held in Dakar in March 2022. The situation in the region can be addressed over there. I believe that the public opinion will side with the Autonomous Administration. UN agencies are supposed to provide assistance in these matters. We reiterate that such a water cut would not be acceptable anywhere in the world,” Alain Boaneh said.
