Border crossings in North-East Syria to be reopened

The Tabqa and Tahya border crossings will be opened from the 20th to the 26th of May.

The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria issued a curfew on 23 March to contain the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic. The curfew has already been extended several times.

First of all, the border crossings were closed. Since then, pandemic prevention teams have been regularly disinfecting streets, squares, shops and public facilities. Parallel to the proclamation of the curfew, crisis teams have been set up in the cities to coordinate action on the ground.

With a few exceptions, almost all public facilities were closed and travel was suspended. As a result, travel between cities within northern and eastern Syria was prohibited except in extremely urgent cases.

Quarantine centres have been established throughout northern and eastern Syria in case of suspected infection cases. In addition, all health centres were subjected to special cleaning.

The Autonomous Administration issued a decree on Sunday and announced that the Tabqa and Tahya border crossings would be opened from the 20th to the 26th of May.

The decree also called for stricter compliance with the coronavirus measures after the opening of the border crossings.

Tabqa border crossing and Tahya border crossing in Manbij are located in the areas under control of the Autonomous Administration and the Syrian government.
