Catalan delegation visits Kobanê

A Catalan delegation visited Kobanê city in the Euphrates region in North-East Syria.

A delegation from Catalonia visited Kobane on Tuesday and met the Executive Council of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Euphrates region.

The delegation, made up of Catalan MPs Robin Wagensburg and Marc Barbasil and human rights activist Lara Costafreda, was received by a delegation from the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of the Euphrates region, at its headquarters in Kobanê.

The two sides discussed the relations between the Catalan region and the Autonomous Administration in recent years, especially after the Catalan Parliament’s official recognition of the Autonomous Administration in October 2021, defining it as an important step in the relations between the two sides.

The Catalan delegation was informed about the political, economic and social conditions that the regions of North-East Syria are going through, especially the city of Kobanê, which is exposed almost daily to attacks by the Turkish occupation army.

The co-chair of the Executive Council in the Euphrates region, Mihemed Şahin, told the delegation about what is happening in the region, especially the efforts of the Turkish state to occupy the region through repeated aggressions and drone attacks targeting citizens, and the silence of the international powers regarding the increasingly ongoing Turkish violations.

Şahin asked the Catalan delegation to further strengthen relations between the two sides, especially in the field of education and services, and to convey what is happening in the region to the whole world. He stressed that the recognition of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria would secure the rights of all components in the region and help to end the Syrian crisis.
