The recognition of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria by the Parliament of Catalonia aroused great attention in the region and the world. In this context, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) General Assembly congratulated the Catalonian Parliament with a written statement published on Thursday, which includes the following:
“On such a historic day, the sacrifices made by the people and martyrs of North and East Syria yielded results with the recognition of the Autonomous Administration by the Parliament of Catalonia. We, as the PYD General Assembly, want to express our gratitude to the Catalonian Parliament and Catalonian people for fulfilling this moral and humanitarian duty. This brave step will conduce toward the solution of the Syrian crisis in a correct way. We approve of the Catalonian Parliament’s approach to our project and its recognition, since we have been able to prove it to be the best model to solve the Syrian crisis.
Thank you, Catalonian people,
Thank you, Catalonian Parliament.”
BACKGROUND
On July 19, on the ninth anniversary of the Rojava Revolution, a draft resolution was presented in the Catalan Parliament to recognize the self-rule of northern and eastern Syria and to show solidarity with the region.
On October 20, the Parliament of Catalonia approved the motion recognizing the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
The motion presented by Esquerra Republicana, Junts per Catalunya, En Comun Podemos and Cup, said: “The Parliament of Catalunya recognises the existence of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria based on Democratic Confederalism as a political subject and urges the Catalan institutions to establish institutional relations with this administration.”
The motion also said: “[The Parliament of Catalonia] underlines the potential value of Democratic Confederalism as a peaceful, inclusive, democratic and co-existence for the Middle East based on municipalism, feminism and social environmentalism.
The Parliament of Catalonia calls on the institutions, the civil society and the citizens to promote a solidarity network to participate in the reconstruction of the region through brotherhood with its citizens, both for the material reconstruction and the welcoming – temporary or permanent – of refugees.”
Finally, the motion “urges the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia to create a table of different administrations, civil society and organisations to promote such a solidarity network.”
