The Turkish state forces and allied mercenaries are carrying out artillery attacks on the northern Syrian town of Ain Issa. The target of the bombardments is the area surrounding the refugee camp, which is located about two and a half kilometres northwest of the town centre on the edge of the important M4 road. A resident of the town was injured in the leg by the shelling and is being treated in a nearby hospital.
On the other hand, the occupation forces launched a bombardment on the Assyrian-Syriac village of Til Tewil at around 16:50 local time.
Ain Issa is located south of the Turkish occupied zone in northern Syria and is strategically important as a link between the self-governing regions of Euphrates and Cizîrê. For more than a year, the town has been in the crosshairs of Turkey and Islamist proxy forces. Heavy artillery hits residential areas and the M4 almost daily. Since the occupation of Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî in October 2019, sporadic attacks to wear down and displace civilians have taken place as part of a low-intensity war. Several villages in the region have already been destroyed and depopulated.
Only last Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) prevented an attempted occupation in Ain Issa. The target of the attempted infiltration was the village of Sêgiro (Sukairo), south of Ain Issa. This was the second major attack by the occupation forces on the village within a few days. A week ago on Monday, heavy fighting broke out near Sêgiro after a large contingent of Turkish-backed mercenaries tried to enter the village. The fighting resulted in heavy casualties on the side of the attackers, who had to leave behind the bodies of those killed as they retreated.
