In the autonomous region of North and East Syria, as well as in Aleppo and Damascus, demonstrations and memorial events were held for the Kurdish women Sakine Cansız (Sara), Fidan Doğan (Rojbîn) and Leyla Şaylemez (Ronahî), who were murdered by the Turkish secret service (MIT) in Paris eleven years ago. Evîn Goyî, who was shot dead together with Mîr Perwer and Abdurrahman Kızıl in front of the Ahmet Kaya Cultural Center on 23 December 2022, was also commemorated.
Sakine Cansız was a co-founder of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party), Fidan Doğan was a representative of the KNK (Kurdistan National Congress) and Leyla Şaylemez was an activist in the Kurdish youth movement. The attack affected women from three generations of the Kurdish freedom movement. Evîn Goyî, who had joined the guerrillas as a teenager in the early 1990s, later fought in the Women's Defense Units (YPJ) in Rojava against ISIS and was shot dead in Paris during the preparations for the commemorative events on the tenth anniversary of the assassination.
Qamishlo
Thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Qamishlo organised by the women's association Kongra Star and the Young Women's Association. A spokeswoman for Kongra Star, Şaha Xelîl, accused France of delaying the investigation of both massacres and said: "France boasts of defending democratic values and human rights, but these massacres took place in the French capital and no one has been punished for them to this day."
At the Jineology faculty, a seminar was held on the lives of the revolutionaries murdered in Paris, and copies of Sakine Cansız's biography "My whole life was a struggle" were distributed to the students.
Hesekê
A march was staged in Hesekê with the participation of hundreds of women from Til Temir, Zirgan, Dirbêsiyê, Shaddadi and Hol. After the march, Fatima Keleş, one of the executive members of Dirbesiyê Kongra Star, made a speech. Keleş condemned the massacre and vowed to continue their struggle.
Kobanê
A demonstration also took place in Kobanê, starting in the Square of Free Women. In a speech, PYD politician Mehabat Koçer spoke about the role of the women murdered in Paris in the Kurdish freedom movement. Koçer said that Sakine Cansız laid the foundation for the women's revolution.
Tabqa
Hundreds of people, including members of non-governmental organizations, participated in the march organized by the Zenubiya Women's Community Assembly in Tabqa.
Semîre Hebeş, a member of the Zenûbiya Women's Community Assembly, said: "The crimes against humanity committed by the occupying Turkish state in Syria and other regions continue. Three revolutionary women were murdered, but they are always immortal for us."
Semîre Hebeş drew attention to the silence of the international powers against the occupying Turkish state, which is committing crimes against humanity in Northern and Eastern Syria and emphasized that the international powers are complicit in terrorist attacks with this silence. At the end of her speech, she underlined that they will be the followers of the martyrs and that they are determined to protect the freedom of the people and the gains of the revolution.
Shehba
Thousands of Afrin and Shehba Canton residents marched with the slogan "Raising the fire of resistance is revenge for the martyrs of the Paris Massacre".
Following the march in the Fafin district of Shehba, Feride Ibis spoke on behalf of Kongra Star Coordination in Shehba, saying: "Three women fighters were massacred in Paris in front of the eyes of the French government. But the French government is silent about it."
Speaking on behalf of the Assembly of Martyrs' Families, Menal Şêxo pledged to follow the path of martyr Sakîne Cansız.
Aleppo
Kongra Star and the Assembly of Martyrs' Families in Aleppo organized a march within the scope of the events organized with the slogan "The revenge of the Paris Massacre is victory and protection of the women's revolution".
Thousands of residents of the self-governing neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah participated in the march, displaying the photographs of the martyrs of the first and second massacres in Paris and banners reading "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" (Woman, Life, Freedom) and "Forgetting is betrayal".
After the march, Kongra Star Aleppo Coordination member Berjîn Mihemed said: "The targeting of prominent women by the occupying fascist forces is an indication of the desperation of the occupiers in the face of achievements".
Remziye Salih, member of the Women's Assembly of Martyrs’ Families, said that they will continue the struggle of the three pioneering women.
Damascus
Kongra Star organized a meeting with the participation of dozens of women in the Zorava neighborhood of Damascus. In the meeting, the struggle of the martyrs of the first Paris massacre was highlighted and the massacre was condemned.
