With the new school year underway in Northern and Eastern Syria, the Education Authority of the Jazira Region opened an academy of technology in Qamishlo, specifically for the purpose of providing technological education to children whose parents have been killed in combat.
Rojava Information Centre, writes that near the Turkish-occupied areas, however, frequent shelling disrupts education. Currently, the schools in al-Zaydi, Terwaziyah Wusta, Terwaziyah Shimaliyah, and Safyan villages (Ayn Issa) are reported to be out-of-use due to bombing.
Furthermore, it is reported that children in schools close to occupied areas often return home soon after beginning their classes because of shelling, whilst parents fear sending their children to school when they hear the sound of shells.
Meanwhile, Raqqa faces overcrowding in classrooms, due to a lack of schools. 80% of Raqqa was destroyed as the SDF-Coalition re-took the city from ISIS in 2017, thus most schools had to be re-built afterwards. IDPs moving to the city also put more pressure on schools.
Khalaf al-Matar, co-chair of Raqqa's Education Committee, stated that they will soon re-build 3 destroyed schools: al-Rashid elementary and high, al-Batani and al-Sebahiya schools. He added that 2 other schools have already been restored this year.
