The Syrian People's Initiative for the Freedom of Abdullah Öcalan visited the Armenian Community Assembly in Qamishlo as part of meetings with political parties and community representatives.
Members of the Initiative were welcomed by Kohar Xecedûriyan, Co-Chair of the Armenian Community Assembly and Hena Somê, Education-Organisation Officer of the Assembly.
"The isolation imposed on Leader Abdullah Öcalan is proof that he is a great and influential person" said Kohar Xecedûriyan and remarked that the Turkish state is afraid of Abdullah Öcalan's ideas and therefore intensifies its attacks.
Drawing attention to the strong historical ties between Armenians and Kurds, Xecedûriyan touched upon Turkey's efforts to disrupt this relationship.
Emphasising that Abdullah Öcalan's ideas offer a democratic life for peace and equality, Xecedûriyan stated that Abdullah Öcalan's philosophy supports women and that women benefit the society as they are empowered by these ideas.
Xecedûriyan remarked that they would send letters to the Armenian Lobby and the International Human Rights Organisation to express their demand for the physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.
Hena Somê, Education-Organisation Officer of the Armenian Community Assembly, stated that they have adopted Abdullah Öcalan's ideas since 1980 and that these ideas have brought different peoples together. Hena Somê noted that Öcalan's photographs are hanging in their houses and that he is the representative of all peoples.
After the visit, the members of the initiative presented Abdullah Öcalan's defences and books to the Armenian Community Assembly and then continued their talks.
On 14 May 2024, the initiative started visiting political parties in northern and eastern Syria as part of the "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question" campaign that was launched globally on 10 October 2023.
On 26 May, the Initiative met with Kurdish, Armenian, Syriac, Assyrian and Arab political parties and started talks with parliamentary, church and tribal opinion leaders on 29 May 2024.
