The town of Zirgan in northern Syria continues to be the focus of the Turkish army and its jihadist proxy forces. The bombardments, which have been going on for days, continued on New Year's Day, particularly affecting the villages of Esediyê and El-Xidêr in the north of the region.
In the meantime, the attacks have also shifted towards the centre. Several artillery shells hit the town hall grounds on Saturday. A building still under construction was hit just a few metres from the seat of the municipal administration. The lower part of the building was massively damaged and shells tore numerous holes. A vehicle parked nearby was also damaged.
No people were injured by the bombings and the town hall has been closed for the New Year. Information about possible casualties or even deaths from El-Xidêr and Esediyê is not yet available. In the latter village, two adult women and a small child were killed in attacks by Turkish-Islamist occupation forces a few days ago. Five other civilians, including two children aged one and a half and five years, were injured.
Strategic position of Zirgan
Zirgan (ar. Abu Rasen) is located about thirty kilometres east of the town of Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain), which has been fully occupied since October 2019, and lies on the edge of a connecting road between the 712 and M4 strategic routes. It is just under 25 kilometres from Zirgan to the town of Til Temir, which Turkey also wants to incorporate into its illegal occupation zone.
