PYD commemorated the martyrs of 12 March Uprising and said "12 March Uprising is the foundation of 19 July 2012 Revolution."
The Democratic Union Party (PYD) issued a written statement on the 20th anniversary of the Qamishlo uprising.
The statement drew attention to the developments in Syria, Gaza, Yemen, Sudan and Ukraine, as well as the increasing tension in the Middle East and East Asia. It emphasised that the basis of the tension is the imposition of sovereignty by the central states in the Middle East and the disregard of the hopes, history, political and geographical realities of the peoples of the region, especially the Kurdish people.
PYD remarked that 12 March 2004 Uprising was not a state of turmoil as claimed by the Damascus government, adding: "During the 12 March Uprising that started in Qamishlo, nearly 40 people were martyred, dozens of people were injured and hundreds of Kurds captured by Syrian security institutions were tortured. The popular uprising, which spread throughout Rojavayê (Western) Kurdistan and North-East Syria as well as Damascus and Aleppo, had great repercussion. The uprising was one of the main factors of the Syrian revolution that started in mid-March 2011, and it is also the basis of the 19 July 2012 Revolution. The aim of the revolution is to draw attention to the need for change and democracy in Syria, to solve the problem of the Kurds in Syria as a national issue and to solve the problems in the region."
The statement stressed that the central power system has failed to achieve its goals of creating conflicts among Syrian institutions and playing with the values of the uprising.
The PYD called on the peoples of northern and eastern Syria to protect their territorial gains, while calling on political parties and other forces to unite and take a political stance against the enemy and abandon political interests.
The statement concluded by stating that the solution to the conflict in Syria is Resolution 2254 and underlined that the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria sets an important example for stability and peace in the region.
