PYD says 'essential for families and lawyers to meet Öcalan'

The PYD said in a statement that "it is essential for families and lawyers to meet with leader Abdullah Öcalan," given the threat posed by coronavirus.

In a written statement the PYD General Council said that it is not acceptable to deny family and lawyers visits to Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The statement emphasized that the isolation of Öcalan did not fit any principles or humanitarian measures and angered the Kurdish people.

The statement said: "While the whole world is dealing with the coronavirus epidemic, the Turkish state continues to carry out its policies of hostility against the Kurdish people. The Turkish state continues to support mercenaries in Syria, because of its hostility policy.

While the Turkish state is doing these in our region, it maintains its policy of pressure towards political prisoners and journalists inside. The Turkish state, as well as not doing any statement about prisoners, also prevents families from meeting their relatives. The isolation of President Abdullah Öcalan is still continuing and all applications made by family and lawyers have been rejected."

The PYD General Council "emphasize that the Turkish state should end these practices. We call on all democratic circles and human rights organizations to play their roles and take action to end the Turkish state's hostility to prisoners. It is essential that the isolation ends as soon as possible, and the family and lawyers meet with leader Abdullah Öcalan.
Our people should work to remove the isolation imposed on leader Abdullah Öcalan and to improve the conditions of political prisoners."
