Exams in Qamishlo are held at the end of each school year to evaluate students' academic success. This year, unlike previous years, a significant opportunity was provided for those who couldn’t continue their education due to war conditions, enabling them to resume their studies. Additionally, the Education and Teaching Committee supported all students in achieving good results in the final exams.
Rênas Fetah, a member of the Jazira Canton Committee of Education and Teaching, spoke to ANF about the exams for the 2024–2025 academic year.
He said that the education of all students in the regions of Northern and Eastern Syria will be evaluated at the end of the year. "After the regime change in Syria, in particular, the education system in the autonomous administration areas was transferred to the current autonomous administration. During this time, the autonomous administration assumed the responsibility of protecting students' educational rights and continues to strive for a bright future for them. Following these developments, extensive preparations were made to ensure students’ success this year. The Education Committee held comprehensive meetings. A general exam system was developed for students. At the same time, the Education Committee released a statement announcing that the education and exam systems would continue unchanged, just as in previous years."
Fetah went on to say that a special education branch was opened for students who were not attending schools and wanted to take exams independently. He added:
"Students will prepare for the year-end exams according to their branch and study all subjects. Schools will take on the necessary responsibility to help students prepare for their exams. There are many students who will take the exams independently. This shows that our youth want to advance in science and literature. Preparations were made for these independent exams. Additionally, committees were formed to organize exam locations and question formats, ensuring everything proceeds smoothly."
The number of students has increased
Fetah emphasized that many young people who could not continue their education in previous years have now applied to the Autonomous Administration to obtain their diplomas, and this year such an opportunity has been offered to everyone, leading to a significant increase in student numbers.
He added: "Registration for independent students will continue from November 2024 to May 2025. Each canton prepares questions according to its own region and student needs. Those coming from Shehba and Aleppo did not have a major impact on us as the Education Committee. We directly placed these students into schools and continued our education system. However, due to the ambiguous stance of the Damascus government, some students still don’t know where they will take their exams. Nevertheless, the participation of students and teachers from the Shehba region has enriched the education system in North and East Syria. Students attending regime schools in Syrian regions have also been integrated into the Autonomous Administration’s education system. However, no information has been received so far from the Damascus government regarding the future of these students."
Fetah continued: "Currently, the Autonomous Administration has taken on the responsibility for these students. However, the exam questions for these students will be based on the regime’s curriculum so they can complete their exams according to their own system. The Autonomous Administration is holding extensive negotiations with the Damascus government on this matter.
A society without education cannot educate or develop its people. Therefore, the primary goal must be education. A student’s purpose is not just to earn a diploma, but also to contribute to the development of society."
