Repairing the Martyrs’ Cemetery to keep collective memory alive

The Martyr Mahmut Tume Cemetery in the canton of Girê Spi has undergone maintenance and repair work. The graveyard in the village of Tenhoza, west of Girê Spi, was built in 2016.
In the graveyard 172 martyrs belonging to the YPG-YPJ (People’s/Women’s Defense Units), SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) Traffic and Asayish (Security) Forces who lost their life during the Rojava Revolution are buried.
Thanks to the joint effort carried out by the Martyrs Association and the Martyrs’ Families Council of Girê Spi Canton, repair, maintenance and decoration works have begun at the graveyard.
The graves of the martyrs are being renovated, and the walls around the graveyard are being repaired.
The martyrs' families also plant seedlings and flowers in the graveyard and they plan to appoint a family to care for the graves.
The Cemetery was named after SDF martyr Mahmut Tume who lost his life on 15 July 2016 while fighting against DAESH (ISIS) in the operation which led to the liberation of Girê Spî.
Mahmut was the first martyr to be buried in the graveyard the families decided to name the cemetery after him.
