Residents in Gire Spi Camp demand water crisis to be resolved

After the Turkish state lowered the water flowing through Euphrates River to North and East Syria, the pumps supplying water for Gire Spi Camp were rendered unusable, too. People living in the camp want their water need to be met urgently.

The occupant Turkish state has been cutting off the water flowing through Euphrates River to North and East Syria for 3 months. Many pumps in the region do not function because of the water outage. Water outage has also interrupted Refi pump which supplies water for the citizens living in Gire Spi Camp located in Til Semin district of Raqqa province. The pump is able to operate only for 4 hours in 2 days.

Due to upcoming summer months and accordingly hot weathers, the amount of water supplied is not adequate for the citizens in the camp. The residents of the camp call on the authorities to urgently solve the water problem.

Şêrin Hiso, a citizen living in the camp said, “Our water was cut a few days ago without us being informed of it beforehand. So, we cannot find water even for drinking.”

Expressing that all citizens living in the camp face water problem, Ebdurrehmen El-Hemed said, “If it continues like this, we cannot continue to live in the camp. The Turkish state invaded our lands and then we moved to these camps. Now, it also cuts our water.”

The administration of the camp, on the other hand, strives to provide water reservoirs to meet the citizens’ need.

Gire Spi Camp hosts 3530 people who were forced to abandon their lands subsequent to Turkey’s invasion attacks on Gire Spi (Tal Abyad) on 9 October 2019.
