Rojava people going to Şengalî’s funeral stopped

People from Northern Syria who headed out to attend Yazidi Society Coordination Member Zeki Şengalî’s funeral were stopped by the Iraqi army in Shengal.

Thousands of Northern Syrians who headed out in the morning to attend Şengalî’s funeral were stopped in the first checkpoint in Shengal by the Iraqi army.

In meetings with Iraqi officials on Friday evening to organize travel to the funeral in Shengal, the organizers were told the Northern Syrian people would be allowed to cross into Iraq to attend the funeral to be held at 15:00 today in Shengal. But thousands of people who headed out from various regions in Northern Syria to attend the funeral were stopped by the Iraqi army at the Gola Khatuniye checkpoint in Shengal.

In meetings with Iraqi officials at the checkpoint, the organizers were told the officers received orders from Baghdad to not let the people through.

The Northern Syrians started to march to the gate afterwards.

FAMILY GREETED WITH SLOGANS

Şengalî will be laid to rest today in a mass ceremony. Hundreds of people from Rojava, Bashure Kurdistan and Makhmur have headed out to Shengal for the funeral.

Şengalî’s family will also attend the funeral and have arrived in Shengal. Şengalî’s wife, son, brother and other family members arrived in the Khanasor town at noon.

Family members were greeted in front of the Qae Lalesh by the people with slogans of “Şehîd Namirin”. Later, the family moved to the Qae Lalesh hall with the crowd and a film was screened depicting Şengalî’s life.

FAREWELL CEREMONY IN THE MARTYRS’ CEMETERY

With the groups from Rojava, Bashur and Makhmur reaching Khanasor, Şengalî’s funeral will be brought to the Shengal Mountain martyrs’ cemetery with a convoy, and a farewell ceremony will start in the martyrs’ cemetery later.
